Essex Standard. 10 September 1852
Application for a New License.
Mr Philbrick, solicitor, applied to the bench on behalf of Mr Robert Gentry, of the Victory beer house at West Mersea, for a general public house license.
The application appeared to excite much interest, and many persons from the locality were present. Mr Turner, under instruction from Messrs Garrad and Son, proprietors of the White Hart (in the occupation of Mr Stedman) opposed the application.
Mr Robert Gentry had for twelve years conducted the Victory beer house with regularity and propriety, wished to obtain a license for it as a regular inn. It was situated close to the landing place of vessels engaged in the coal, oyster and other trades; and since the opening of the railways the increase in oyster trade alone at Mersea had been at a rate of from 100 to 10,000 washes, thereby necessitating the licensing of a public house at that particular spot.
Although the bench were aleways unwilling to increase the number of public houses, in this case by turning an established beer house into a public house its respectability was increased, and the license was granted.

Barking, East Ham & Ilford Advertiser. 16 March 1907
New House at West Mersea, Mr Cloughton-Scott applied for the transfer of the licence of the Victory Inn, West Mersea to new premises about to be constructed. He stated that the present position of the Victory was bad. Its accommodation was poor; it was low lying; and at every spring tide the water rose over the road and cut it off. The new site was on high ground. Granted.
