Wivenhoe pub history index
The BLACK BUOY was formerly the BLACK BOY ; the name was changed in 1911/12, presumably because the then landlord fancied something more nautical. The Black Buoy claims to be the oldest of the still-open Wivenhoe pubs. The present brick frontage is only a facade of c1800, and hides a much earlier structure. The first written record is in 1732. It became a Daniells pub (Trumans from 1958, later Pubmaster). There have been several major internal alterations since the 1950s.
