Wivenhoe pub history index
The Brewery Tavern Beerhouse was built to act as the retail outlet ('tap') for the adjacent 'Wyvenhoe Brewery'. Like the Yachtsman's Arms, the Brewery Tavern was actually in Elmstead parish until 1896. After the Brewery closed it became a Daniells pub, passing to Trumans in 1958. Only in 1960 did it obtain a full licence. In the early 1960s, under Jack Cross, it became a home for the artists of 'new Wivenhoe', and many art exhibitions were held here until the 'Wivenhoe Arts Club' at Ballast Quay House took over that function in 1966. The pub closed in 1986.
Residents at this address
I have always known that my great, great grandfather, John Havens, was a shoemaker, and his occupation is stated thus on the 1841, 1851, and 1861 census returns, but I have just discovered that it seems likely that for a short time he ran the Brewer's Arms in Wivenhoe. He was born around 1816 and died on 25th January 1871. In the 1871 census the address of his widow, Mary Havens, is given as " High Street, Brewers Arms" and "beerhouse keeper" is
given as her occupation. *
August 1869/John Havens, beer house keeper, of Wyvenhoe, was summoned for
having his house open for sale of beer during prohibited hours on the 5th July. He is quoted as stating that "my son has been made a Forester today, and we have asked a few friends to supper". Case dismissed./Newspaper article *
