Horse & Groom, 55 The Cross, Wivenhoe, Colchester CO7 9QL

The Horse & Groom first appears in the licensing records in 1772 with Samuel Halfhide the licensee, and the original portion of the building might be of that period. There were very few houses at Wivenhoe Cross prior to the late 19th century, and little road traffic. Nevertheless the Horse & Groom seems to have traded successfully until c1870 when it disappears from the Directories, presumed closed (?), until reappearing c1885.
It was acquired by Osborne's, thence passing to the Colchester Brewing Co. and Ind Coope; but was sold off to Adnams in the early 1970s
