In my family history research there seem to have been publicans at various
Cheltenham pubs at one time or another - could have a good time researching
in the area!!
Samuel Grinnell (1806-1865) was publican at the
Duke of Wellington, St James
Street, Cheltenham in 1861 and died at the Barley Mow, Stanhope Street,
Cheltenham in 1865 (was it the beer?).
Samuel Grinnell Jnr born 1842 had the Horse &
Groom, St James Street in 1871; By 1883 he was at The
Phoenix Inn, Lower
High Street. In 1912 he was publican at the Nelson
Inn 221 High Street
John Grinnell b 1826, brother of Sam Jnr is a publican living at 18 Vernon
Place, Cheltenham - no pub name given.
Thomas Grinnell b 1829 has The Pilgrim Inn,
Rutland Street, Cheltenham in 1871.
Going down to the next generation:
Frederick Grinnell (b 1870 son of Thos Snr) lives at the Harp Inn, High
Street in 1901 and is a general labourer for a beer retailer. He seems to be
the landlord in 1903 (Must have signed the pledge as he works for the
corporation waterworks in 1911!)
Thos Grinnell (b 1873 son of Thos Snr) 1901 and 1911 is licensee at The
Plough, Staverton Bridge (Gloucester Road in 1911 - presume it is the same
place)
Jane Grinnell (b 1867 daughter of Thos Snr) was owner (leasehold from the
brewery) of North Place Stores 1891, which appears to have been a licensed
ale and porter stores. She married Harry Gay and bought the freehold in 1903
and her husband became landlord. Elizabeth Grinnell, her sister, lives there
and assists in the business in 1911.
I don't know of any Grinnell publicans in recent years, but they still like
to keep their local pubs in business!
