There was a very large attendance at the Grand Hotel, Bristol, yesterday afternoon. when the well known inn known as the Half Moon, Coalpit Heath was offered for sale by auction by Mr A Victor Osmond.
The inn is situated on the main road to Yate and Chipping Sodbury, and has been in the occupation of the vendor, Mr George Stone, and his forbears for a century and a quarter.
Nearly all the brewing companies in the West of England were represented at the auction being knocked down to Messrs H M Lang and Co brewers of Curry Rivel, Somerset for the sum of £12,300.
Somerset Standard 18 February 1966
Wadsworth and Co, the Devizes brewers, have extended their interests. Soon after opening the Kingfisher, a new public house at Chippenham, they acquired and rebuilt the Half Moon at Coalpit Heath and bought the Plough Inn at Pilning. They acquired the last free house in Cheltenham, the Cotswold Inn. At Calne they took over the Lickhill Stores, a full off licence and obtained a licence for a new public house at Lickhill.
The Plough at Pilning will be the first public house for South Wales traffic on this side of the Severn Bridge.
