1923, John Hanman, manager, Saracens Head Hotel, Eastgate Street, Gloucester

My parents, Maurice & Ruby Lloyd, were landlords of the hotel between 1947 and 1953.
Visiting County cricket teams occasionally stayed there when playing Gloucestershire at the Wagonworks ground.
The courtyard at the back had staff accommodation on the right and on the left garages where mostly coal was stored. I kept my bicycle there & reported it stolen. My parents (I was 12years old) bought me a new bike but months later my bike emerged from under the coal as the coalmen had buried it!
I commuted each day to Dean Close School in Cheltenham. A good school friend was Ted Dowty nephew of the Dowty Rotol and Gloucester Aerodrome owners. I remember climbing onto the roof of the Guildhall when Col Carne was awarded the VC with a big parade. I remember a Mr Jennings was a regular customer who owned a printers in the City. *
