The Forester (Coleford). 20 August 1881
Frederick Davis, a young collier of Ruardean Hill was charged with stealing 6 shillings from the Jovial Colliers beerhouse, Ruardean, the property of Thomas Wilce.

Gloucester Journal. 07 January 1899 - A Ruardean Failure
Rezin Preece, collier of Ruardean Hill, formerly beerhouse keeper and butcher of the Jovial Collier Inn, Nailbridge, Drybrook, came up for his public examination.
His liabilities amounted to £77 11s 3d, with no assets.
The Debtor stated he started life as a collier, after which he took up butchering. Two years later he took the Jovial Collier Inn, at which time he had £20, which he paid to Mr Wintle for the ingoing. He had to leave as he was fined for supplying drink to a drunken person.
Losses were attributed to bad trade and being next to an adjacent colliery which was closed down.
