I have just come across your site as I am researching my father's family who
were all publicans. *
From the 1911 census, I have discovered that the Pembroke, West Hill in
Bournemouth was managed by my grandfather, George Porter who lived there
with his wife, Florence, three of their daughters, Dallas, Marie and
Georgina and their son George, my father. It was the last place George
Porter Senior ran before being killed in an accident with a brewers dray in
1916. Prior to that the family were living at and running Porter's Golden
Rose at 57 Old
Bailey, London EC, which is where my father was born in 1906. I have a menu
from 1904. *
There were possibly four Porter Brothers who also all ran pubs in London. I
have found confirmation, thanks to your site, that Edwin Porter brother of
George Porter Senior was running the
Chandos, St Martins
Lane, London EC in 1891. I believe the brothers ran other pubs in central
London. *
