The Turners Arms at Stratfield Mortimer was built from two adjoining cottages in 1867. Alfred Taylor was one of the sons of my Great Great Grandfather, Benjamin Taylor, who owned a large wood business at Mortimer. Benjamin and his wife Barbara lived in and ran the pub through the 1870's and 80's during which time had 5 sons, one of course being Alfred. Apart from supplying Broom handles etc to the British Navy etc and various farm implements, a large part of the business was in Wood Turning and Carpentry in general hence the Pub's name, The Turners Arms. Benjamin and his son's plus Alfred were in fact all Master Turners. There is a family crest denoting the Wood and Tayloring connections on the front of the pub. There is another Pub nearby, The Carpenters Arms which was owned by another of the sons, I believe his name may have been Robert. Another Pub, The Victoria Arms in Mortimer was owned by James Taylor, ( My Great Grandfather ), another of Benjamin's sons, He gave the pub as a wedding present to his son and his new wife, Arthur and Helen, ( my Grandfather and Grandmother ). At the rear of that pub was a thriving wood business, By Appointment To Queen Victoria, ( Hence the pub name ). *
