My 2nd Great Grandfather was John Scorey, at the Market Inn, 20 Church Street and later the Abbey Hotel. This is recorded as his final address in his probate record, of 1908. *

Change of Tenancy - We perceive from an advertisement in another column that the old established house called the Market Inn has changed hands, Mr John Scorey having succeeded Mr George Russell, who has occupied it for many years past.

Romsey - A warning to Publicans, At the Police court, on Friday, John Scorey, landlord of the "Market Inn," Church street, Romsey was charged with allowing gambling in his house on Friday, July 2nd. Defendant accused Mr Purchase, one of the magistrates, of speaking detrimentally of his house, and challenged him to prove his words or name his informant.
Mr Purchase denied ever saying anything against the house, but on further objections of Mr Scorey he retired from the Bench.
Mark Dibden, who was in plain clothes, said :
I am a detective sergeant of police stationed at Winchester. On Friday, the second day of this month, I went to the "Market Inn" in this town, kept by defendant, at about 11 o'clock in the morning.
I had some refreshment and then left for the day. I returned again about half past eight o'clock. I had something to drink, and then went into the bagatelle room. I saw two persons playing bagatelle, and from their conversation I could tell it was for a pint of ale. The younger lost the game. They then agreed to play another game for a pint of ale, and the younger man lost again.
The bell was rung, and on the waiter coming in the younger man said. "That's two pints I have to pay for", and he paid the waiter 6d.
Then the younger of the two joined with another, and played two other men, and they appeared to be playing for beer. When they finished the landlord came in and said, "There is fifteen pence to pay", and the money was paid between them.
Several respectable witnesses were called for the defence, but the Bench, relying on the detectives evidence, convicted defendant of the offence, and imposed a fine of 5 shillings and 7s 6d costs.
