1871 saw George Washington Jones as
Landlord of this old Cooper’s Brewery House, it was noted for its gardens
and amusements , which included boxing matches, in the early 1930’s the then
Landlord Arthur Cornish-Trestrail introduced a bear pit complete with bears,
after one of them died it was stuffed and displayed at the pub for many
years. It was also the first home of the world famous Concorde Club before
its relocation to Stoneham Lane it hosted many of the top 1960’s acts
including Manfred Mann who were regulars at the club.
It became a Watney’s Brewery House when they acquired Cooper’s Brewery, in
1972 it was refurbished at a cost of £80,000 and relaunched as a Berni Steak
House, it was then sold to Whitbread’s Brewery before finally closing in the
1990’s and being demolished and replaced by a Old Person’s Care Home. *
