Breweries: Perkin’s Globe Brewery, Brickwood’s Brewery, Whitbread Brewery *
Dating back to the early 1850’s when Sam Stevens a local builder was recorded as the Landlord. It was a fully licensed premise. It was familiarly known as the Canute. The Hotel was built to cater for travellers passing through Southampton Docks. In the early 1900’s it was tied to Perkin’s Globe Brewery, 1925 saw it taken over by Brickwood’s Brewery before finally becoming a Whitbread premise in 1971. It stood empty between 1991 and 1993 when it reopened as the Trawler Bar which was a free house, it has since closed and is now offices and flats. Local folklore states the pub stands on the spot where King Canute reproved his courtiers in 1028. *
