Carpenters Arms, 46 Craven Street, Southampton, Hampshire

Southampton pub history index

In 1866 Welsh’s Lion Brewery took out a 34 year lease on this private residence at £15 per annum, opening it as the Carpenter’s Arms (the building on which the lady in the photo is leaning on) - it was later leased to the Winchester Brewery. However, in 1911, it was refused a licence for which the Brewery received compensation of £725, and so it once more became a private residence. The building was demolished in the 1930’s under a slum clearance scheme, although nothing was built on the site until the 1950’s due to the outbreak off WW2, Council Flats now occupy the site. *
