Castle Hotel, 85 High Street, Southampton, Hampshire

Southampton pub history index

Dating back to the 1820's with a one Robert Playford (who went on to be landlord of the Albion Hotel) as landlord, it closed in the late 1880's. The building was used as offices until they were badly damaged during a WW2 air raid, the site has been left vacant so as to display the Towns medieval wine vaults which used to form part of the pubs Cellar. *

Researching American author Nathaniel Hawthorne's time in the UK, 1853-1857, I found that he stayed in Chapple's Castle Hotel in Southampton. The building was bombed in WW2, and the medieval vaults left. In fact, from a contemporary picture you can see that the hotel was actually built using the medieval walls of the West Gate. **
