Southampton pub history index
In 1880’s when William Blore was its Landlord it was registered as a Beer House owned by the Scrase’s Star Brewery later being owned by Strong’s Romsey Brewery, until Whitbread took over in 1969. The pub gained a full licence in 1933 following Salisbury Arms in French Street surrendering it’s Licence, it acquired an infamous reputation with it’s drag acts in one bar and ladies of the night in the other. To try and combat this it changed it’s name in 1986 to the Castle Tavern which did not quite achieve the required outcome so in 1993 it changed names again to the Bosun’s Chair. *
