Southampton pub history index
1851 saw Alfred Ireland opened this beer shop and small brewery (nowadays called a micro brewery) it address then was 14 Upper St Mary Street, it is thought that the name North Star comes from HMS North Star on which Mr Ireland served. The early 1900’s saw it owned by Welsh’s Hyde Abbey Brewery before being brought by Cooper’s Brewery becoming a Watney’s Brewery pub when they brought Cooper’s Brewery. It suffered a severe fire in October 1989 and was boarded up till 1991 when it reopened again this however did last long as it closed and was demolished to make way for housing between 2000 - 2004. *
