Southampton pub history index
This 1850’s fully licensed pub had a William Hyde as landlord and was then called Spa Road Tavern owned by the Aldridge’s Bedford Brewery being taken over by Cooper’s Brewery in the early 20th century later becoming a Watney’s Brewery pub and finally a Chef & Brewer Bar, it under went a major extension and refurbishment in 1963,a garden patio was added overlooking Portland Terrace. The pub closed and demolished along with its neighbour the Wig & Pen in the mid 1990’s to allow the development of the West Quay Shopping Complex. *
It would appear that it was quite a boozy place as in 1903 landlady Mrs Higginson was fined 10/- (50p) for allowing drunkenness in the premises, March 1908 saw landlord Mr Baron was fined £1.00.00 for each of two counts of selling beer to a drunk person, again in February 1912 landlady Emma Steindal was fined £2.00.00 for allowing drunkenness on the premises. Cooper’s Brewery were refused a licence in February 1924 but were granted one on appeal in 1925. *
