1898/Frederick George Brown/grocer & Beer Retailer,, 2 Middle Street/../../Kellys Directory
My mother Beryl White was born and brought up in the York Tavern in Middle
Street. Google Maps and my own memory of visiting my grandmother Elizabeth
Sillence and her second husband Albert Sillence in the pub confirm that it
would have been 2 Middle Street on the corner with Methuen Street. *
Looking at your records the pub in 1911 was on the census as PH but without
a name. Also listed in Dis 20 is the Bevois Town which was on the next
corner down. I also saw a listing for my grandmother, listed as Eliza
Sillence but only as a beer seller rather than the licensee of a Public
House. *
I know the York Tavern was a Strong and Co of Romsey house with a classic
pub yard which we used to play in when we visited and you can still see the
configuration of the pub on Google although it has been a house for a good
few decades now. *
