Hampshire Observer and Basingstoke News. 29 February 1908
The owners presented an application in respect of the Monument inn, Upper High street.
This house had been recently been very much improved, and was now structurally very much better than it was. The present holder of the licence desired to cater for the wants of the people attending the Assizes and Sessions held at the Castle, and in order to carry out this and to call attention to it, the owners, the Winchester Brewery Company, had instructed him to make an application to the Court that the name on the register might be altereed from the Monument to the Castle, thus showing the connection between the licensed house and the Castle.
