Winchfield has lost a notable character by the death on Monday of Mr James Tait McGinty, aged 75, Licensee of The Beauclerk Arms for the past 10 and a half years.
Mr McGinty, who died a week after his removal to Winchfield Hospital, was very well known in the boxing world and was for many years a prominent member of the Amateur Boxing Association. He was a referee, and accompanied the British boxing team to amsterdam for the 1928 Olympic Championships. For many years he was a familiar figure at the big London and provincial boxing tournaments and he was also seen at many of the big professional meetings.
Mr McGinty had a great sense of humour, and was born at Kendal in Westmorland, and became a book finisher and leather worker.
For 16 years he was licensee of The Grapes Hotel, The Minories EC3, and it was from there that he came to Winchfield. He was a Freemason and a member of the Nore Lodge, Southend.
Mr McGinty is survived by his wife, and a son and daughter.
