My uncle and aunt Tony and Jo Russell were licensees and proprietors of the
Royal in the 1960s to mid/late 1970s, he was also the head chef and host of
the very popular bar and top grade restaurant. I had a couple of holiday
jobs there mid 60s as assistant chef and gofer. The Royal was also used by
the London CID as their HQ during the Great Train Robbery investigation. Mid
60s the old mail/railway stables etc and courtyard were still all intact,
and I think it had an old disused ballroom maybe. I called in there around
early 80s after their passing and found it had seemed downgraded to just a
regular pub environment. ***
NB Prior to The Royal, Tony and Jo were proprietors of The
Red Lion, High Street in Dunstable, High
St during 50s to 1960+ ***
