My ggggg grandfather, Edward Whyman kept the Woodman - there is a gap in
land tax between 1783-1790. He was there until his death in 1803; then his
son John was publican until his death in 1825; and then his wife Sarah took
over and remained at the Woodman until 1851. *
She then she moved up the road to the [Blue] Bell
Nuthampstead. Sarah was there circa 1851. On Sarah's death, her elder sister
Hannah took over .The Bell license was terminated on 31 December 1930, and
the inn became a private residence.
The Whyman family served almost 150 years in the trade But there were still
WHYMANS in Barkway pubs *
