My great-grandfather, Joseph Searle, is shown in Kelly's Herts Directory of
1902, 1906 and 1908 as being a ‘beer retailer’ in Turners Hill, Cheshunt.
The electoral roll of 1906 shows him residing at the Old English Gentleman.
He is not listed in the 1910 edition of Kelly’s (Herts). *
The 1901 census records him living in Edmonton, N9, and Kelly’s Essex
Directory gives his 1917 address as 48, Ashdown Road, Saffron Walden (the
same address lists him as a beer retailer in the 1922 Kellys directory). Joseph
Searle is listed as resident at The
Axe and Compasses (now the Axe) in the
same year. (Google maps now give the address of The Axe as 60, Ashdon Road),
I cannot be sure of when he moved to the Old English Gentleman, or when he
left it. I only know he was elsewhere in 1901. In 1914, he is listed as a
beer retailer at 55 Castle Street, Saffron Walden, this would be the
Five
Bells.*
In 1922 and 1925 you cite Kelly’s (Essex) as showing Joseph with two
addresses and two pubs: The Axe, and also
The Nags Head
in Braintree. Is this likely,
or are there two Joseph Searles? The last entry for the Nags head is 1937
with J Searle, proprietor. It is known that my great-grandfather died in
that year. *
