Herts Guardian.14 May 1859
The Woolpack Inn, Old Cross, has recently been pulled down by Mr McMullen, the owner, who intends to erect a new and commodious public house on the site.
On the east side of the room facing the Old Cross three old inscriptions were discovered on the walls, surrounded by coloured scroll work; below was the date 1701.
Some persons suppose the place to have been part of the church which formerly stood on the Old Cross, but this is a mistake.
The church was on the site of the house now occupied by Mr F Raw, and it went into decay in the early part of the reign of Henry VIII; remains of the walls and windows may still be seen in the cellar.
A few worked stones, mouldings etc, were found on the site of the Woolpack, and some of the materials of St Marys church wrer evidently used for the foundations of the Old House.
