Hertford Mercury and Reformer 22 May 1981 - Walk beats all expectations
Landlord, Mr Bob Bowman of the Old Crown, Much Hadham, and his wife Mary organised a customers sponsored walk on Sunday to raise £400 for a traction bed for the childrens ward at the Herts and Essex Hospital, Bishops Stortford.
The result passed all expectations - and when all the sponsor money is in the walk is expected to raise about £1,200, three times the original target!
Mr and Mrs Bowman have already been in touch with the doctors at the hospital to find out what other peiece of equipment is needed in addition to the "Kings Fund" traction bed already on order.
The 35 Much Hadham walkers - men and women including some teenagers - did a marathon 23 miles from the Old Crown to the Bulls Head, Turnford, and back - reaching the Old Crown foot weary but triumphant between 3 and 4.30 pm. Hoddesdon branch of the British Red Cross manned various check points along the route and dealt with one or two blisters.
Coming back, the party met another 70 walkers taking part in another sponsored walk organised by Mr Jim Crane, landlord of the Alexandra Tavern, Wood green, in aid of Stoke Mandeville Hospital. They also walked 23 miles - from Wood Green to Much Hadham - and finished at the Old Crown.
