My mum and dad (Reg and Trix Holland) ran the
Artichoke, for I think, a
year, in 1965. They had run The Swan Hotel in Rickmansworth High Street from
August 25th 1955 to September 12th 1964 when it was unbelievably pulled down
for redevelopment! Within a couple years, any building with a bit of
history, had a Preservation Order slapped on it! I have a list of the
Tenants there from 1656 to 1964! My parents then moved back to Essex, where
my grandparents had run pubs and hotels, and took over
The Victory Inn, at
Ashingdon for ten years until they retired in 1975. They are both dead now.

I have a scrap book of lots of information on The Swan. One newspaper
cutting (from September 5th 1891!) reports on a Carriage Accident, where
Mrs. Holland (my dad Reg's grandmother, who ran the Cart & Horses in the
High Street (corner of Bury Road, Ricky) "and some members of her family
were being driven in a 4-wheel carriage and the horse pulling it, fell down
and kicked furiously. The carriage was much damaged but neither the driver
nor the occupants were in any way injured." *
