Hertford Mercury and Reformer. 10 August 1844
Royston - Dreadful Death. On Thursday an inquest was held at the White Lion public house, Royston, before P Longmore Esq, deputy coroner for the county of Hertford, and a very respectable Jury, on the body of a young man, named Jasper Perry, of this town, who was found dead in a well, in the yard of the White Lion.
It appeared that the deceased left his hone on the evening of the 5th instant and attended his club at the White Lion, and was seen to leave that house about eleven o'clock in the evening, and walk in the direction of the well, into which it is supposed he must have accidentally fallen, it being very dark at the time, and the well lids carelessly left open.
Information was given to the police, late on the night of the 6th instance, who got assistance and dragged the well, where the body of the deceased was found, life being, of course, quite extinct. Verdict "Accidentally Drowned".

Herts & Cambs Reporter & Royston Crow. 02 August 1878
Sad accident on Wednesday last, a painful accident happened to Thomas Nelson, the man who drives the mail cart between Royston and Buntingford.
It appears Nelson had occasion to go into the stables at the White Lion, and while standing behind a horse belonging to one of the stallmen in the market, the horse kicked out and struck Nelson with terrible force on the side of the face. He was removed home to Mr Wilson's, Kneesworth street, and medical aid summoned, when it was found that he had sustained a compound fracture of the jaw bone of a serious character.
