Alfred Ridley was the brother of my great grandfather. Alfred Ridley was
born 1871 in Nutley, Sussex and I have his death listed as 3 Feb 1931. He
married Patience Ann Osborn, born Fletching, Sussex in 1873. The landlord of
this inn was Alfred Ridley up to 1937. Alfred
and Patience's oldest son was born 1893 at Upper Dicker, Sussex, so perhaps
he took over after his father? The postcard shows the inn, and most probably
Alfred and Patience. The people were named in a written note, but I am not
absolutely certain from looking at it closely whether it might be Alfred and
mother rather than Alfred and wife. Patience was called 'aunt anne' so maybe
ann was the name she went by. Patience's sister Fanny married Alfred's
brother Spencer (my g grandfather). *
George Orwell apparently lived next door - the author of 1984, and many
other brilliant novels *
