My maternal grandfather, Jack Hare, was the owner/landlord during WW2. I can remember visiting as a child during that time. *
Jack was a champlon bantam weight boxer and I recall that the bricked up window was painted with a rampant hare wearing boxing gloves.

In 1900, in West Ham, John Hare marries Rose Raby. The 1911 census has Rose living in East Ham with four children, Alice, Norma, Eva and Jessie, whilst husband is working elsewhere. His boxing career is suggested that in 300 bouts, he only lost 3 of them.

Jack Hare, the well known bantamweight (who has recently returned from India), leaves for Canada tomorrow (Thursday) by the F.S. Parisian.

Jack Hares Optimism.
Jack Hare, the Globe trotter, sends me another cheery note. He is taking a strong hand in the war, which, he says, will soon be over, and of course, end in the defeat of the Huns.
He writes me as follows : " Since seeing you I have got my commission on the Courageous as First Class Petty Officer. I might tell you I saw Mrs Childs this morning. Her husband, Albert Childs, as you are aware, was well known as 'Bert Smith' of the Custom House, and got killed on the third of this month. You took him once to a private show at Swindon, but I forget who he sparred with. He was sergeant-major in the West Surreys, and he died as he lived a dead trier. When he was leaving for the front I was goung back to sea, and as we shook hands he said : "Jack, if I ever come back I'll try again for the East Ham Council (he had put up twice and failed), but if the dice rolls the other way, and I lose, I know Mr Bettinson, Dick Burge, and others of the sporting fraternity will help my family out".
Poor Bert, he was a good all-rounder. He was beaten for Doggetts Coat and Badge by Pusey of Lambeth. He was a Thames Waterman, and, as you know, acted as sparring parther on the music halls to Jack Johnson. He was a real good sort, was Bert, always willing to do his bit for anyone in trouble and distress".

In the 1939 electoral register at the Castle and Banner, Hunney Hill are
John Hare, Publican, born 13th August 1874
Rose Hare, born November 1st 1880
Will A Sherratt, a Tyre Warehouseman, born 16th April 1908
and Eva C Sherratt, born 5th February 1907.
William A Sherratt marries Caroline Eva Hare in 1934 at Southampton.

The Hampshire Advertiser 20 May 1939 has a grainy photograph with the following caption.
