Troopers Inn, St James Street, Newport, Isle of Wight, Hampshire

Newport pub index

The Trooper Inn was a very old house dating from the 16th century which survived until the 1960's, it was characterised by its low ceilings and small rooms. The name had an obvious link with the military presence at Parkhurst and stood by the entrance to Towngate.
After closure it lingered on as a wholesalers warehouse before demolition. The site still stands empty and the adjacent garage uses it as a forecourt car display area. *
