My 6x-great-aunt, Sarah Beazley (nee Truslow), apparently ran a pub and then a hotel in Ryde around the 1840s.
In 1841 George Beazley, the captain of a packet ship, and his wife Sarah (née Truslow) lived at the Union Tap in Pier Street, Ryde with their grand-daughter, Charlotte Turtle (7). It may be that Sarah ran the pub when George was away, but no relevant records have been traced.
In 1851 George had retired from the seafaring life and the couple ran Beasley’s Hotel in Ryde, which was located at 9 Pier Street opposite the pier. Charlotte Turtle still lived with them and worked as their barmaid. The household included two unmarried local girls: Emma Thompson (29), the chambermaid, and Eliza Sivell (24), the cook. Sarah was widowed when George died in 1852 and. after his death she gave up the Hotel: within two years it had been taken over Mr E Wood and renamed the Royal Eagle. *
