CHARING is a small town at the foot of the Chalk Scarp in the high road from
Ashford to Maidstone; thirteen miles from the latter S.E., and six miles
N.W. from the former, and forty seven miles from London. The church is an
ancient building; the living is a vicarage, in the patronage of the Dean and
Chapter of St. Paul's; the Rev. Francis Blackburne Tate, M.A., is the
incumbent. The population in 1821 was 1,821. Swan Street is one mile and a
half west; Charing Heath two miles west; Burley one mile and three quarters
west; Newlands one mile and a half S.W,; Crow's Hale one mile and a half
north; Stockwood Head one mile N.E.; Spitgate one mile east; Westwell and
Leaton ope mile S.E. Eath is a small village. Bockton, Barnneld, Acton and
Dormstone are other places.
