In 1861 census, at the Rock Inn, Chipstead Common is listed John Wood, a Carpenter and Publican, aged 62; plus son JOhn Wood, a Carpenter Journeyman, aged 22, Susan Wood, aged 22 listed as Grand Daughter, but probably his sons wife, along with James and John, Grandsons, aged 9 and 7. The latter two are born in Market Droxton, Shropshire, and all others in Chevening.

In 1871 census, Chipstead Common, John E Poole, is a Hotel Keeper, aged 33 born in Bridgwater, Somerset and his wife Ada Poole, aged 32, born in Camberwell and two servant, Emma Batchelor, aged 19, born Edenbridge, Kent; and Alfred Levitt, aged 16, born in Riverhead, Kent.
