I have just received the death certificate for my great x3 grandfather
Francis Parker which shows that he was a Victualler in Cuxton, Kent. He
died in 1837. In the 1841 census his daughter Mary Parker is shown as
the publican of a property in Cuxton Street, near the rectory (her
sister Sarah is living with her). Mary married Edward Jupp in 1842 - I
expect she was a bit of a catch as she owned her own pub - even though
she was around 6 years older than him. (She lies about her age in the
1841 census but owns up in the 1851 census!).
In the 1851 census, Edward Jupp is the "Victualler" as you know, with
his wife Mary (Parker). In the 1861 census, the pub is now named as the
"White Hart Inn" with Edward as the Licensed Victualler, his wife Mary
and a niece, Sarah Peters. Mary died in 1868.
In the 1871 census, the pub is clearly shown as the White Hart with
Edward as the Licensed Victualler and two "nieces" as barmaids,
including Sarah Peters! *
