DEAL is a seaport town, municipal and parliamentary borough, and Cinque port of Sandwich; it is in the Eastry union, lathe of St. Augustine, East Kent, Canterbury Archbishopric, and consists of the parishes of Deal, Shoulden, Great Mongeham, and Walmer. Deal is 73 miles from London by road, and 102 miles by railway, 21 miles S.E. from Canterbury, nine miles north from Dover, and 17 miles from Margate. The town is well paved, and lighted with gas. The population in 1851 was 10,438. St. Leonard's.Church, Upper Deal, is an ancient structure. The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury; the Rev. John Nisbit, M.A., rector. The new church is dedicated to St. Andrew; the Rev. David B. Payne, M.A., curate.
St Mary's church, Shoulden, is a vicarage, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
St. Martin's church, Great Mongeham, is a handsome building; the living is a rectory, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury. St. Saviour's Chapel, Walmer road, is a neat structure. The Roman Catholics, Independents, Baptists, Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists and Unitarians, have their chapels here. Large numbers of barges are built here. There is also some sail making, rope and sack making, brewing, malting and fishing carried on. The barracks are in Walmer. Little Mongeham is about one mile and a half west of great Mongeham, and its population in 1851 was 134.
Foulmead, How Bridge, Finglesham, Marley, and Hockling, are two miles and a half N.W.; Cottington is pne mile N.W. Near the railway station, are the exotic gardens of Mr. James Ricketts, which are well worth inspecting, and contain a beautiful show of plants, etc.,
