The new Inn’ was closed quite a long time ago but remember seeing it when
visiting East Farleigh with my mother around 1938/9 before it closed and
again since its closure. My mother told me she was born there lst November, 1883 .My
grandparents were newly married when they moved in but moved after
several years and the birth of a second daughter in Oct. 1885. My
grandparents name did not appear on any of the lists held at the White
Lion, or The Walnut Tree, but I feel that may be due to the fact that
they were not owners, and possibly she was a paid employee. My
grandmother learned the trade from her uncle George Hughes who was the
publican at ‘Old England’’ in Hollingbourne. (also closed some time
ago).The
family then moved to ‘The White Lion’ in Dean Street where my
grandmother was the ‘Beer keeper’. This is shown on the census 1891. I
have visited ‘The White Lion’ several times over the years and lunched
there. On my last visit it had just been bought by a couple about to get
married who had obtained permission to change the premises to a private
residence. ***
