Thomas Prout took over being landlord in about 1855. Prior to that he is only shown as a shopkeeper/baker (early in his career, including 1841 census, he was a rope maker – but I think this was a particularly unpleasant job so I’m not surprised he changed). Thomas lived until 1869, so presumably he handed over to his son-in-law Alfred Beale at about that time – but I don’t have any evidence for this. William Thomas seems to totally disappear about 1855 too – he might have died but I can’t find a relevant death registration of the time (there was a William Prout went to Australia in late 1854 and died 1862, and many of his Prout relations had already gone there – but it is too early to confirm if this is the right person). *
