GODMERSHAM is a village and parish near the Canterbury Branch Railway,
three miles N.E. of Wye Station, 75 from London, eight from Canterbury, S.W., and
six from Ashford, N.E.; in the lathe of Scray, hundred of Felborough, and union of
East Ashford, East Kent. The population was, in 1851, 424. The church of Saint
Lawrence is a plain building; the living is a vicarage in the gift of the Archbishop of
Canterbury, and incumbency of the Rev. T. H. Gale. Hurst is three-quarters of a
mile north ; Pope Street, three-quarters of a mile N.E.; Ripple and Trunworth, half-a mile
south; Belton, one mile S.W. j Egerton, one mile east, on the border of the great
wood, called Penny Pot Wood
