My great grandfather, John Smerdon, ran the Duke of Wellington pub in
Gravesend, Kent in 1901. He is an instructor for the Honourable Artillery
Company at the birth of Gladys in 1892, and later in the 1911 census he
lists himself as an army pensioner. *
