The Beichtellers lived in Gravesend from around 1820 to about 1916 and were
mostly watermen or fishermen. J Beichteller was a fishmonger in West Street,
in 1858; This is John Beichteller who was born in Gravesend in 1824 and died
there in 1883. John Beichteller's son, Jacob Biechteller, who was also a
fisherman and fishmonger, became the licensee of the Old Amsterdam public
house at 6, East Street in about 1894 and remained there until at least 1910

The Old Amsterdam was taken over and converted into a Norwegian seamen's
mission in about 1930 (second photo) and these pictures appeared in an
extract from a Norwegian newsletter describing the history of that mission. ***
