William Newings wife (see the George, Queen street) and then widow was named Catherine Bennett Newing (nee Simeson). At the time of the 1851 census, the elder of William and Catherine’s two sons, John William Newing (my wife’s Great grandfather) aged about 3 years 8 months were living at ‘The Ship' in Bath Street Gravesend where Catherine's sister, Mrs Ann Browning (herself a widow at the time of the 1851 census) was the Licensee. Also living in ’The Ship' at the time of the census were Catherine’s two unmarried sisters, Sarah Simeson and Barbara Simeson. Catherine then died on 8/6/1851 and her younger son, Edward James Newing, died 6 days later on 14/6/1851. John William Newing was born on 29/7/1847 and he died on 10/10/1901, aged 54 years. *
