HAWKHURST, a small town and parish three miles N.W. from Eclingham station, and
five S.W. from Cranbrook, is in the hundred of East Barnfield and Cranbrook
union, lathe of Scray, West Kent, and partly in Sussex. The church, dedicated to
St. Lawrence, is an ancient edifice. The living is a perpetual curacy in the
gift of the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford; the Rev. H. A. Jeffreys is
the incumbent. The population in 1861 was 2,704. Scales Crouch is half a mile
west; Delmonden, one
mile N.W.; High street and Highgate, half a mile north; Lightfoot Green, one
mile and a half north; Trenley, two miles north; Tubslake, three miles north;
Gill's Green, two miles north; Beal's Green, one mile and a half north; Hocksley,
one mile north; Four Wents, three miles north; Atwater, three miles north;
Tilden, two miles and a half N.W.; Gun Green, one mile N.W.; 3?our Throws, one
mile east.
