Kings Arms, 6 Market Street, Margate

Margate pub history index

The Kings Arms was established in the early 1800's. It was the only hostelry in town to have a wet-fish bar and seafood stall adjoining the building. The stables still remain at the rear of the building from the Kings Arms.
The pub had a refit in 1975, when it was renamed The Doggett Coat and Badge, The unusual name commemorates the achievement of an ex-Landlord, who in 1958 won the annual Thames Lightermans Race. The victor receives an ornamental red coat and badge, first donated by a Mr Thomas Doggett in 1716. The winner also automatically becomes a Queen's Waterman, on call for occasions of Royal Pageantry.  *** (also see the Ship & Lobster in Gravesend)
