Evidence concerning the White Cross dates
backto 1729 when William Jones is recorded at Ye Brandy Shop and Alehouse, North
Cray. From 1730 it is called the Red Cross.
In 1935 the war Office ruled that the name contravened the Geneva Convention and
made an appropriate reference to the Red Cross Society. Accordingly, the brewery
changed colour to White. At present the sign depicts the white Maltese Cross -
the sign of the Knights Hospitallers and by derivation of the St John's
Ambulance Brigade. **
