At the Coach & Horses, the "Placing of the Hot Cross Bun" is observed every
Good Friday. Sharp at noon, the landlord, Mr S F Stewart takes a bun and
nails it to the oak beams supporting the ceilings while customers form a
circle behind him; then drinks on the house. The bun will later be varnished
over. This quaint ceremony was started at the Coach & Horses while Mr Bob
French was licensee. He put up 15 buns, while Mr Stewart has placed ten. The
Coach & Horses is Northfleets second oldest hostelry. - Black Eagle 1949
