My great grandfather John Francis Bignell Hammond (not George Hammond, as quoted in Kelly's) was the licensee of the New Eight Bells Inn in 1918. He had served in the Army ASC as a farrier quartermaster sergeant from 1914 until 1917 before moving to Robertsbridge in 1918. In the previous century he had served for 19 years in the 11th Hussars as a farrier sergeant, retiring from the regiment in 1896. From 1898 to 1901 he was the licensee of the New Inn, Plaxtol, Kent. From there he moved to Lenham Heath, Kent to work as a corn miller at the Chapel Mill. As far as I know, he continued to work there until he joined the ASC.
His first wife died at the New Inn, Plaxtol in 1898, leaving three children. He remarried in 1899 and had three further children. His second wife was Annie Cree. She appears in the 1911 census, at Lenham Heath. I have been unable to trace her after that date. My great grandfather died in 1946, presumably a widower.
