Residents at this address
Richard Hill and his wife, Elizabeth, were, as far as I can ascertain from
1841 and 1851 Census and Newspaper articles, managing the Captain Digby Inn
in Kingsgate from 1823 to 1851. They no doubt managed the inn for a longer
period outside these dates but finding out how long is proving harder to
discover. Richard Hill died in 1850 and the running of the inn passed to
Elizabeth. *
Newspaper articles in the Kentish Chronicle of August and November 1823 show
that Richard and Elizabeth were both indicted, along with Richard Cooke, for
defrauding the revenue, in other words smuggling. Due to health issues,
Elizabeth escaped imprisonment, however the other two were both imprisoned
for 6 months in Canterbury and ordered to pay a fine of £100 along with
other costs. *
