ST PETER'S - This parish is within the liberty
and jurisdiction of the Cinque Ports, and is a member of
the town of Dover, in the union of the Isle of Thanet. The
population in 1851, including Broadstairs, was 2,975. The
village, which is distant two miles both from Margate and
Ramsgate, stands on a pleasant eminence. The church is dedicated to
St. Peter, and is a handsome Gothic structure. The living is a vicarage, in
the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and incumbency of the Rev. S.
Robins. Kingsgate is a hamlet near the North Foreland, with a Coast
Guard station; Sole Street is a hamlet close to St. Peter's. Adjoining St.
Peter's are Dumpton and Newlands. Upton, Bramston, Fair Street, Romfields,
Northwood, Westwood, Poor Hole, Sackett's Hill, Buddles, Shallows, George
Hill, Reading Street, Joss Street, Beard's Hill, Callis Court, Dane Court,
and Nash, are other hamlets.
