Melvilles 1858 Directory of Kent.
STAPLE is a small village, eight miles east from Canterbury, two S.E. of Wingham,
and four west of Sandwich. The church of St. James is remarkably long and low,
with a square tower. The living is a perpetual curacy, united with the rectory
of Adisham, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and incumbency of the
Rev. W. Dickins. There is also a Baptist chapel in the village. The population,
in 1851, was 590. Grove Park is a large park and seat. Barnssell is three
quarters of a mile east; Ham Hill Court, one mile and a half S.E,; Summerfield,
half a mile S.E.; Cricksall, half a mile south; Tweedham, a quarter of a mile
S.W.; Pedden, one mile north.
Letters received through Wingham, which is also the nearest Money Order Office.
